In this method, test pieces are placed on a mineral salts agar and inoculated with fungal spores. One organism per 2” x 2” test piece and 4 different fungi are recommended, but larger sample size, choices of fungal species and pooling of the spores are common customer-requested modifications. The TAPPI T-487 ratings are found to be ambiguous to many customers so a modified rating scale that is used in the ASTM G-21 is available upon request and gives a greater level of detail to the fungal growth. This test has a 3-week incubation.
- Non-standard samples sizes, customization of inoculum and other modifications are available upon request. Those conditions will be noted in the final report.
- The normal rating scale for the T-487 is qualitative and is commonly substituted with the G-21 rating scale of 0-4 to provide greater detail of the fungal growth.
- Temperature and humidity are monitored with instrumentation that has been calibrated with NIST-traceable standards.
