In this test method, test pieces are placed on the surface of a mineral salts
agar and inoculated with a mixture of 5 different fungi at a concentration of
1,000,000 spores/mL. Although the test is designed for plastics, the fungi used
in the test are all cellulolytic and therefore can also used to determine
mold-resistance of paperboard and wallboard. A sample is defined as 3 test
pieces, 2” x 2” with each piece labeled or in a bag that is labeled. An
untreated control sample is also required and is considered an additional test
sample. Comparison pictures are taken at the end of the test and included in the
report.
- Customers can request pictures of specific comparisons.
- There is a 4-week incubation for this test and results are usually available 5
weeks after receipt of samples. Custom modifications to the inoculum are
available for an additional cost and may extend the time for testing.
- The normal rating scale for the G-21 is a 0-4 scale with 0 being no growth. Upon
request, a 0-100% coverage scale can be used to give greater detail of the
fungal growth.
- Temperature and humidity are monitored with instrumentation that has been
calibrated with NIST-traceable standards.
